Les Rencontres d’Arles
The famed summer photography festival, Les Rencontres d’Arles, kicks off in the South of France this week. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP) — a French school for photography conceived by the festival’s founding leaders. In celebration of this milestone, the festival is devoted to showcasing the work of ENSP alumni. The result is a sprawling, engaging look at the work of photographers familiar and not-so-familiar, covering a diverse range of styles. Rencontres d’Arles features work by acclaimed photographers outside the French school as well, including candidates for the LUMA foundation’s Discovery Award. In addition, the city of Arles boasts a multitude of exhibitions and events sponsored by associated organizations.
